The head of the Polish Foreign Ministry is skeptical of French initiatives regarding negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine

The head of the Polish Foreign Ministry, Zbigniew Rau, said that he is skeptical about the French initiatives regarding negotiations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, because there is nothing to indicate that Moscow is ready to revise its policy of territorial acquisitions.

He stated this while presenting the foundations of Polish foreign policy in 2023 to the Diet, RMF24 reports.

Rau emphasized that the last two years have been characterized by the intensification of Polish-French political cooperation, also within the framework of the Weimar Triangle. According to his assessment, the strengthening of these relations was influenced by Russian aggression against Ukraine.

"We are pleased to observe the evolution of France's position on the enlargement of the European Union, especially France's support for the decision to grant Ukraine candidate status," Rau said.

At the same time, according to him, Warsaw is skeptical of French initiatives aimed at conducting negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in one form or another.

"Unfortunately, we do not see any signs that Russia is ready to revise its policy of territorial acquisitions. However, the possible generation of such negotiations should not entail any special guarantees for Russia, except, of course, compliance with the norms of international law, which are guarantees of peace for all other countries," the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry emphasized.

He emphasized that Poland, on the other hand, highly appreciates the growing involvement of France in the policy of containing Russia within NATO. Rau recalled that France is present on NATO's eastern flank as a framework state thanks to its presence in Romania and Estonia, where it participates in air and sea surveillance of the region and in the air patrol mission over Poland.
