The Netherlands government is working on a complete end to imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia.
This was stated in an interview with Bloomberg by the Minister of Energy of the country, Rob Yetten.
This year, the Netherlands stopped signing new contracts for the import of liquefied gas from Russia without announcing this decision, the minister noted. He added that the country is working on terminating existing contracts.
"We have to do everything we can to make sure we don't have Russian fossil fuels in our system, and we've been successful with coal, pipeline gas and oil," Yetten said.
He added that the government is in many talks with companies to phase out previous LNG deals.
The Netherlands' decision will apply to both spot and long-term contracts. The country is a transit country for gas supplies, meaning the decision could have a wider impact across Europe.
Significant volumes of Russian LNG continue to flow to Europe despite Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.
The Netherlands still imports Russian LNG under old contracts signed until 2023.
