On Thursday, the Lithuanian Parliament unanimously approved a resolution that includes a clause on the need to officially invite Ukraine to join NATO at the Alliance summit to be held in Vilnius in July.
This is reported by LRT.
The adopted document states that it is necessary to invite Ukraine to "join NATO as a member state" at the NATO summit in Vilnius.
At the same time, the parliamentarians emphasized that "it is necessary to sign the accession protocols and start the ratification process as soon as conditions permit."
According to the resolution submitted by representatives of various political groups, inviting Ukraine would be a strategic decision by NATO aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine and Europe.
The document also emphasizes the need to significantly strengthen forward defense and deterrence in the Baltic region and throughout the eastern part of NATO, as well as to increase the Alliance's ground forces, which are permanently stationed in Lithuania, to the level of a brigade.
The resolution also establishes a desire to strengthen integrated air and missile defense, including air defense capabilities in Lithuania and throughout the region.
The document also establishes the desire to ensure the readiness to receive allied troops on the territory of the country.
Lithuania will host the NATO summit for the first time on July 11-12. About 40 delegations from NATO member countries and partners will take part in it.
We will remind you that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyі, believes that at the summit in Vilnius, the Alliance should propose further steps for Ukraine's membership - in particular, strategic security guarantees on its way to Euro-Atlantic integration.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's ambition is to advance as far as possible to membership in the Alliance at the summit in Vilnius in the summer.
