In Montenegro, according to the results of the second round of the presidential elections, which took place on Sunday, the economist, candidate of the "Europe Now" movement Yakiv Milatovych won. In this way, he will replace the current president of the country, Milo Djukanovic, who has ruled Montenegro with short breaks since 1991.
On the night of April 3, an election observer from the Center for Monitoring and Research (CEMI), which is based in the capital of Montenegro, Pidgorica, reported that Milatovich received more than 60% of the vote.
Djukanovic conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent.
37-year-old Milatovych is a former Minister of Economy and Economic Development of Montenegro. His campaign promises included fighting corruption and improving living standards. Last year, Milatovych became a co-founder of the Europe Now party. Speaking to his supporters after the victory, Milatović promised that within the next five years Montenegro will join the European Union. The country acquired the status of a candidate for joining the EU in 2008.
At the same time, as the BBC correspondent in the Balkans reports, he is supported by parties close to Serbia, Russia and the Orthodox Church.
According to CEMI, voter turnout was about 70%. The official results of the Montenegrin presidential election will be announced in the coming days after all complaints of voting irregularities, if any, have been addressed.
