The Hungarian ruling party "Fidesz" on Tuesday proposed to postpone the parliamentary session scheduled for next week, where the ratification of the protocol on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO was to be considered.
This was reported by the Hungarian deputy from the opposition Democratic Coalition, Agnes Vadai.
"I just received a letter from (Vice Prime Minister Zholt) Shemien. The pro-government parties do not want to hold a parliamentary session next week. Therefore, the ratification of the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO will be postponed again. This is a pro-Russian government, it is against the EU and now it is against NATO!" she wrote on Facebook.
The Fidesz party confirmed to Reuters that the parliament will not hold a session next week, which, they say, is due to a "delay in negotiations with Brussels" - it refers to the dispute between Hungary and the European Commission over the allocation of EU funds.
"The parliamentary group will make a decision on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO after the delegation of legislators (who visited these two countries) submits a report on this visit," the Fidesz press service added.
The ratification process in Hungary's parliament has been stalled since July 2022, and in February Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused Finland and Sweden of spreading "blatant lies" about democracy and the rule of law in his country.
The vote for the accession of both countries to the Alliance in March has been postponed for the second time.
We will remind you that until recently, Budapest did not make any demands to Helsinki and Stockholm, however, at the end of February, Orban's party made it clear that they had their own claims, and decided to send a delegation to Sweden and Finland.
On March 7, the parliamentary delegation of Hungary, after a meeting with the speaker of the Swedish parliament, declared that it supports Sweden's application for membership in NATO.
