The United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom called on the UAE to stop re-exporting goods to Russia, especially electronics, which could be used to continue the war in Ukraine. The Financial Times writes about it.
Western sanctions officials visited the UAE in February to discuss a wide range of trade restrictions and pressure local officials to end possible sanctions violations, those on the trip said.
"Our main demand is that the UAE stops re-exports and admits that they are problematic," the Western official said, adding that "negotiations are ongoing."
In 2022, exports of electronic components from the UAE to Russia will increase sevenfold to nearly $283 million, while chip exports will increase 15-fold to $24.3 million, according to Russian customs data analyzed by the Free Russia Foundation. Also, according to the data, the UAE supplied Russia with 158 drones worth about $600,000.
The UAE is aware of its role in the global financial system and "has clear and robust processes for dealing with sanctioned entities," a UAE official said.
