USA on Putin's decision to terminate the nuclear agreement: regrettable and irresponsible

Russia's decision to suspend the strategic offensive arms treaty with Washington is "deeply regrettable and irresponsible", but the US remains open to discussing the issue.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said this on Tuesday, AFP reports.

"We are still ready to talk about limiting strategic arms with Russia at any time, regardless of what else is happening in the world or in our relations," Blinken said.

The US secretary of state spoke after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Moscow's participation in the latest arms control treaty between the world's two major nuclear powers.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Russia to reconsider its decision to suspend its participation in the SNO treaty.

The Treaty on Strategic Offensive Weapons, which was extended for five years in 2021, remains the only valid arms control treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States.

The treaty signed in 2010 limits the strategic carriers and nuclear warheads of the Russian Federation and the United States to 700 and 1,550, respectively.
