More than 36,000 people have died in Turkey and Syria as a result of the devastating earthquake, according to the latest estimates.

The death toll in Turkey and Syria after the catastrophic earthquake has reached at least 36,217, according to CNN.

In particular, the number of victims in Turkey has reached 31,643, the Turkish emergency coordination center SAKOM reported on Monday.

The confirmed death toll in Syria is 4,574. That number includes more than 3,160 people in opposition-held parts of northwest Syria, according to the government's Health Ministry Rescue.

The Syrian death toll also includes 1,414 deaths in government-controlled areas of Syria, according to state news agency SANA.

Turkey was shaken by a powerful earthquake on February 6, which was felt in neighboring countries. Syria was also significantly affected. Earthquakes then repeated, and aftershocks of a weaker force were also felt.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared a three-month state of emergency in the country's southeast due to the earthquake.
