Garibashvili: "Georgia, as the first reformer, deserves the status of a candidate for the EU"

Prime Minister of Georgia Iraklii Garibashvili commented on the European Commission's report on Georgia's fulfillment of the technical criteria for rapprochement with the European Union.

"The European Commission has published an analytical report on the compatibility of the national legal framework of Georgia with EU legislation.

The document clearly reflects the progress achieved by our country on the way to European integration, and once again clearly demonstrates that Georgia, as the first reformer, deserves to be granted the status of a candidate country for the European Union," wrote Garibashvili on Twitter.

As previously reported by Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozvyak, who reviewed the draft reports, Georgia is ahead of Moldova and Ukraine in meeting the technical criteria for rapprochement with the EU.

At the end of June 2022, the leaders of the EU countries decided to recognize the European perspective of Georgia, however, unlike Ukraine and Moldova, the country will be granted candidate status only after carrying out a set of reforms. They are formulated in the recommendations of the European Commission, consisting of 12 points. Among them are overcoming polarization, de-oligarchization, reforms of the courts and the electoral system.

Georgia's implementation of 12 recommendations for acquiring the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union will be assessed by the European Commission in the spring of next year.
