The ECtHR decided on the date of the beginning of the Russian occupation of Donbas

On Wednesday, January 25, the European Court of Human Rights determined that the Russian Federation occupied part of Donbas on May 11, 2014. The court also announced its decision on the admissibility of the interstate case "Ukraine and the Netherlands against Russia".

 This was stated by the head of the committee on legal policy, Denys Maslov.

 It is noted that it is about mass violations of people's rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, kidnapping and attempts to illegally take orphaned children to the Russian Federation in 2014 and the plane crash of flight MH17.

 Maslov explained that the court recognized the admissibility of the case. This means the following:

 the court recognizes Russia's control over Donbas and determines the temporal and territorial boundaries of the occupation;

 starting from May 11, 2014, the events in Donbas fall under the jurisdiction of the court;

 The ECtHR will proceed to consider the merits of the case "Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia".

 "This decision of the ECtHR will become an argument for other legal proceedings as well. It will help bring the Russian Federation to justice. Every Russian crime must be proven, and the guilty must be punished," added Maslov.

 It was on May 11, 2014 that pro-Russian militants announced the holding of an illegal "referendum" in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The result of this was the creation of the "DPR" and "LPR" groups controlled by the Russian Federation.

 We will remind you that earlier the European Court of Human Rights issued a decision in the first case about Russia's occupation of the territory of Ukraine.

 Before that, it was reported that the European Court of Human Rights accepted Ukraine's lawsuit against Russia. It was submitted to the ECtHR on June 23.
