Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had a telephone conversation after Berlin's decision to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukrainian defenders.

The chancellor said that sending weapons to Ukraine was the right thing to do, but he wanted to avoid an escalation of the war.
"The cause of the challenges we face is a terrible war of aggression against Ukraine. A terrible war where the principles we agreed upon in Europe were called into question," he said.
Scholz emphasized the "correctness" of close cooperation between the partners regarding the supply of weapons.
