The Ukrainian candidate lost the PACE presidential election

People's deputy Oleksandr Merezhko, who represents the "Servant of the People" faction, received only 44 votes of PACE deputies in the election of the President of the Assembly.

The PACE President was Tinie Cox, a representative of a group of left parties and PACE President in 2022, who received 175 votes. Thus, he was re-elected in the first round.

Of the 223 deputies who voted, only 44 supported Oleksandr Merezhko, who decided to compete for this position as an alternative candidate.

At the beginning of January, it became known that a Ukrainian deputy, head of the committee on foreign affairs, will run for the presidency of PACE. However, he ran against the rules and traditions of the assembly, which resulted in his defeat.

The winner of the election, Tiny Cox, began his work in the restored position with a statement that Ukraine will remain the main priority of PACE, and also announced a moment of silence for all Ukrainians who died due to illegal aggression.
