In the east of Georgia, in Sagarejo, last night a former military man opened fire from the balcony of an apartment on people on the street - five people were killed, "Novosti-Gruzia" reports.
Four residents of the house and a policeman who rushed to help were killed. Five more people were injured, one of them is in critical condition. The shooter committed suicide when the special forces arrived on the scene, before his son got out of the apartment.
At the moment, it is known that 49-year-old Nodar Atuashvili, who shot, served in the Georgian Defense Forces for 15 years, until 2021, was part of a peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan. He lived in the apartment with his son for the past five years.
The investigation is being conducted under the article on intentional murder with grave circumstances, illegal acquisition, storage and carrying of firearms and ammunition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country said in a statement.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Homelauri, took control of the case.
According to him, when the special forces broke into the apartment, the man who shot himself in the head was on the bed, the weapon was next to her, and there were also grenades.
The motive of the crime is unknown.
Local residents suggested in conversations with journalists that the man had mental problems and was taking some medication. Neighbors also say that he had not entered into conflicts with anyone before.
