The EU Observer Mission (EUM) in Georgia confirmed that an incident took place a few days ago near the dividing line in the village of Medzhvryshevi in the Gori municipality. It is reported that the observers, acting according to the security protocol, left the area, and no one was injured.
Earlier, the leader of the anti-occupation movement "Strength in Unity" David Katsarava reported that on January 13, the Russian military fired shots into the air for the appearance of the EU Observer Mission in Medzhvryshev. He, in turn, was told about what happened by an eyewitness - a resident of the village.
Katsarova says that the shots were precautionary - the Russian military wanted to force the European observers to leave the territory.
The incident is likely to be discussed at today's incident prevention and response mechanism (IPRM) meeting in Erghneti village.
The EU Observer Mission in Georgia is an unarmed civilian observer mission. It was launched by the European Union on September 15, 2008. The mandate of the mission covers the entire territory of Georgia within the internationally recognized borders of the country, but the authorities of Russia, as well as the self-proclaimed republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, still refuse access to the territory under their control.
