The European Commission expects that Ukraine will bring its process of selection of judges of the Constitutional Court into line with the recommendations of the Venice Commission.
"The European Commission is closely monitoring the consistency of the reform of the selection process of judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine with the conclusion of the commission on Ukraine's application for EU membership, which, in particular, provides that this process is carried out in accordance with the conclusion of the Venice Commission," the European Commission said.
It was noted there that the selection of candidates for the CCU on the basis of professional competence and the increase in the number of members of the Advisory Group of Experts to seven would increase public trust in the Constitutional Court and ensure the impartiality of the selection process.
"We express confidence that the Ukrainian authorities are fully aware of the respective positions of the Venice Commission and the European Commission and are well prepared to make a decision on full compliance with their recommendations," the European Commission concluded.
