OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid believes that Russia's membership in the organization still makes sense.
She said this in an interview with Welt.
According to Schmid, keeping diplomatic channels open does not mean there is agreement.
"In any case, from today's perspective, I think it makes sense for Russia to remain a member of the OSCE," she said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, called for the exclusion of the Russian Federation from the OSCE in view of Russia's aggressive war.
"One day we will need communication channels again," Schmid said.
According to her, the OSCE is the only security organization in which everyone who is important for the European security architecture sits at the same table. The OSCE arose out of the Cold War confrontation and was founded by countries with very different interests who wanted to prevent escalation, she explained.
In November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi criticized the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe for not being sufficiently involved in efforts to force Russia to end its war against Ukraine.
