EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned Iran for supporting Russia in its all-out war against Ukraine, calling on Iranian authorities to end military aid to Moscow. Borrell said this on Friday after participating in the second Baghdad conference on cooperation and partnership.
"Tehran is aware of Russia's ongoing war crimes against civilian infrastructure. Iran is making a huge strategic mistake, it is taking the wrong path and destroying its credibility when it pretends not to take sides in this war," the top diplomat said. EU.
Borrell added that he raised the issue with Iran's foreign minister, who in response "vehemently denied that Iran was providing drones to Russia, and claimed that such supplies only took place before the Russian attack" on Ukraine.
The top EU diplomat also called on the Iranian authorities to stop executions and bloody repression against peaceful protesters.
"The move to Russia's side and the unacceptable suppression of protests cannot remain without consequences. That is why last week the Council of Foreign Ministers of the EU adopted new sanctions against Iran in response to the supply of drones to Russia, as well as due to human rights violations," he recalled.
