Germany will monitor the outcome of Vladimir Putin's visit to Alexander Lukashenko and how it may affect Belarus' role in the war. This was said by the spokesman of the Federal Government of Germany, Steffen Gebeschreit, at a briefing on Monday.
According to the spokesman, the federal chancellor is fully aware that the Russian president is visiting Belarus for the first time in three years.
"Of course, there is concern about what may be connected with this visit: whether the role of Belarus in the war against Ukraine will change again, or whether it will not be modified."
At the moment, everyone sees that Belarus is at least providing assistance to the Russian military, in particular by providing its airspace and ground bases, Gebeshreit noted.
"Of course, the help of the Russian army can increase," he admitted, but urged to wait for the results and not to draw conclusions in advance.
The speaker also reminded that Scholz in his recent interview spoke not only about differences of opinion with Russia over the past 10 months, but also about "global differences on fundamental issues." Germany now strongly supports Ukraine, and demands from the Russian side the withdrawal of troops and return to a "just world".
