The German parliament has given its consent to eight modernization projects and the purchase of weapons for the army, including American F-35 fighters, proposed by the Ministry of Defense.
This is reported by dpa.
The total cost of the proposed projects is about 13 billion euros. Among other things, the purchase of new assault rifles to replace the G-36, means of communication, modernization of the Puma BMP, new snowmobiles is envisaged.
"Our goal is to significantly improve the situation in the Bundeswehr and to close the gaps that have arisen due to underdevelopment in previous years," said Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht. She also mentioned Scholz's phrase about the "turning point" in history due to Russia's open attack on Ukraine.
The projects are the first phase of a massive €100bn Bundeswehr modernization plan announced by the German government earlier this year.
The US embassy welcomed the decision on the F-35 jets, noting that it will provide NATO with a reliable deterrent in the future and that the US-German defense partnership is now "stronger than ever".
