EU: The Georgian authorities are obliged to provide Saakashvili with the necessary medical assistance

The EU is closely monitoring the reports of Mikheil Saakashvili's health deterioration and calls on the Georgian authorities to take all necessary measures so that he receives the necessary medical assistance.

This was stated by the representative of the EU foreign policy service, Peter Stano:

"The EU is closely monitoring the latest alarming reports about the deterioration of Mikheil Saakashvili's health. The Georgian authorities are responsible for his health and well-being and are obliged to take all necessary measures to ensure that he receives appropriate medical care," Stano said in in his statement on Twitter.

The other day, the non-governmental center "Empathy" published the conclusions of the commission's forensic medical examination on Saakashvili's state of health, from which it follows that he cannot remain behind bars.

The conclusion states that more than 20 diagnoses were found in Saakashvili, 10 of which are "incompatible with imprisonment", and he was almost healthy before his arrest.

The ruling party of Georgia stated that they do not intend to trust these conclusions.

American doctor David Smith provided an expert opinion that heavy metals and other substances, including mercury and arsenic, were found in Saakashvili's hair and nail samples.

Saakashvili has been imprisoned since his secret return to Georgia on the eve of local elections in 2021.
