A new center-left political party - "The Greens" - was founded in Georgia. Its leaders say it is the first openly feminist and queer party in the country.

Queer (English queer) is a collective term used to denote a person whose sexuality and/or gender identity differs from the social majority.

The Georgian service of RFE/RL reports that the presentation of the party took place on November 27 in the Tbilisi club "Mtkvarzi".

One of the founders of the party is 27-year-old Tamar Jackeli, who was educated in the USA and Sweden and returned to Georgia a few months ago.

“The Green parties in Europe, from which we draw inspiration, are very progressive equality-oriented parties: feminist parties that openly support queer people. In Georgia, the Green Party, which still formally exists, has always lacked these progressive views. It was only a party of environmentalists. We believe that the party should deal with environmental and climate issues as well as issues of equality: the rights of women, queer people, people with disabilities, protection of religious and ethnic minorities, social issues," she said.

The "Greens" plan to take part in the parliamentary elections of 2024 and hope to be able to send at least one representative to the legislative body.

Currently, there are about 250 registered political parties in Georgia.
