Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has accepted the candidacy of Angel Tilvar as defense minister after his predecessor resigned over a controversial declaration of peace in Ukraine.
Tylvar, a member of parliament with relatively little political experience and no influence at the executive level, was nominated by the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
His predecessor, Vasile Dynku, resigned due to controversial comments about Ukraine.
Tylvar earned his seat in parliament thanks to his involvement in politics at the local level. He was a senator from the PSD and the head of the delegation of the Romanian Parliament in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He is an English teacher by profession. His father was the head of counterintelligence in the Vranca region.
Dynku resigned in late October after hinting that Ukraine might have to cede territory to Russia as part of potential talks aimed at ending the war.
