The UN called for the continuation of the "grain" agreement and the removal of obstacles to Russian exports of grain and fertilizers. This was stated by the representative of the general secretary of the organization Stefan Dujarrik, the press service of the organization reports.
He reminded that the initial term of the agreement is 120 days and can be extended automatically on November 19, if none of the parties object.
"All parties should make maximum efforts to restore the Black Sea grain initiative and fully implement the two agreements, including the as soon as possible elimination of remaining obstacles to the export of Russian grain and fertilizers," Dujarric said.
The UN also emphasized the "urgent need" to extend the agreement in order to contribute to ensuring food security around the world. In addition, it will "alleviate the suffering" caused to billions of people by the global cost-of-living crisis.
Dujarric said that if food and fertilizers do not reach world markets now, crops in all regions of the world will be at risk in 2023 and 2024. In turn, this will seriously affect food production and food prices around the world, he said.
