Italy's right-wing government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney, easily won the first of two required confidence votes in parliament by a comfortable margin on Tuesday night.

 This is reported by Ansa.

In the lower house of parliament, 235 deputies expressed their support for Maloney's government, 154 were against it.

At least 195 votes were needed for a coalition majority.

On Wednesday, the new government awaits a vote in the upper house of parliament, the Senate, where it also has a solid majority. A vote of confidence is required by the Constitution for new governments.

Earlier on Tuesday, Maloney outlined her government's policy goals, responding to criticism from domestic and foreign critics who worry that her far-right policies could undermine European unity or the civil rights of Italian citizens.

She criticized the European Union for not always being ready for the challenges, including the dramatic energy crisis that threatens households and businesses.

But she promised that her government would stay true to the deal with the EU while working on reforms, including monetary rules.
