A group of congressmen urged Biden to seek diplomatic solutions to the war in Ukraine

30 members of the Progressive Caucus of the US House of Representatives called on President Joe Biden to make "vigorous diplomatic efforts" to end the war in Ukraine through negotiations. Legislators who are members of Biden's Democratic Party signed the corresponding letter on October 24.

"We urge you to combine the military and economic support that the United States has provided to Ukraine with an active diplomatic push, redoubled efforts to find a realistic framework for a ceasefire... We are under no illusions about the difficulty of engaging Russia, given its outrage invasion of Ukraine and its decision to carry out additional illegal annexations of Ukrainian territory. However, if there is a way to end the war while preserving a free and independent Ukraine, America is obliged to use all diplomatic means to support such a solution that will be acceptable to the people of Ukraine," it says in the appeal. .

In the letter, the lawmakers noted that the United States "needs to avoid a direct military conflict with Russia that would lead to World War III." They also noted that a protracted conflict should be avoided given the "devastating" consequences of a Russian war for Ukraine and the world, as well as the risks of nuclear escalation.

Pointing out their responsibility for spending US taxpayers' money on military aid to Ukraine, the lawmakers emphasized that such participation creates a responsibility for Washington to "seriously explore all possible avenues, including direct engagement with Russia."

"The alternative to diplomacy is a protracted war with both the uncertainties that accompany it and the catastrophic and unknown risks," they wrote.
