The Netherlands parliament supported the creation of a special tribunal for Russia in The Hague

The lower house of the Netherlands parliament - the House of Representatives - on Thursday supported a resolution calling for the creation of a special tribunal in The Hague to try Russian President Vladimir Putin and others involved in war crimes in Ukraine. This is reported by RTL Nieuws.

The resolution was submitted to the parliament by the D66 party, which has expressed support for Kyiv since the 2016 referendum on the ratification of the Ukraine-EU association agreement.

According to the political forces, The Hague is a logical choice for creating a special tribunal for Russia, since the International Criminal Court is already located here and previous war crimes tribunals worked here.

D66 member Sjörd Wimer Sjördsma believes the court is necessary to prosecute Putin directly, as the International Criminal Court does not deal with individual cases.

Calls are already being heard in the House of Representatives of the Netherlands to start the first steps towards the preparation of such a special tribunal, without waiting for the end of Russia's war against Ukraine. Thus, the resolution contains a call to the authorities of The Hague to start the search for a suitable building and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - to enlist the support of the EU and the UN.

It will be recalled that in July the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba called for the creation of a Special Tribunal to bring the highest military and political leadership of the Russian Federation to account for crimes committed in Ukraine.
