Canada has announced new sanctions against Iran for its brutal crackdown on protests

Canada has announced personal sanctions against new individuals and companies from Iran for their involvement in gross human rights violations in the country.

This was announced in the government on October 19.

This is Canada's third package of measures against the Iranian regime for "systematic gross violations of human rights and actions that continue to destabilize regional peace and security."

Six more individuals and four organizations were added to the sanctions list, which are said to be directly involved in violations of human rights in Iran, in particular women's rights, and the justification of repression against those disloyal to the government.

Among the people included in the list: Deputy Minister of Interior Seyed Majid Mirahmadi, commander of one of the operational bases of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Mohammad Karami, former head of the Iranian Broadcasting Company Ezzatollah Zargami.

The four listed organizations are specific commissions or councils within the structure of the Iranian government.

Canadian sanctions prohibit cooperation with these individuals and freeze any assets in Canada, as well as an entry ban.

At the beginning of the week, the European Union also approved new sanctions against Iran.
