Germany's federal criminal police now believe that the cause of the gas leaks on the branches of the Russian Nord Stream gas pipelines was sabotage, and that a foreign state is probably behind it. As Spiegel reports, this is stated in the department's letter to the Ministry of Economy, which was at the disposal of the editors.

The police believe that the leaks were the result of purposeful sabotage. They have not yet received information about the organizers, but they note that "given the high complexity of the crime and the need for appropriate preparation, it seems likely that it is a state unit" (state actors).

The agency also warns that it is worth watching out for new sabotages on critical infrastructure, which may be more numerous and more serious - on power lines, gas pipelines, underwater communication cables, LNG terminals, and wind farms.
