The German government is placing Rosneft's German subsidiaries Rosneft Deutschland and RN Refining&Marketing under the control of the federal regulator.
This was reported by the Ministry of Economy of Germany on Friday.
According to the decision, the Federal Network Agency will gain control over Rosneft Deutschland, as well as the corresponding stakes in the three refineries PCK in Schwedt, MiRo in Karlsruhe and Bayernoil in Faubourg.
Rosneft Deutschland supplies about 12% of Germany's oil refining capacity, making it one of the largest oil refining companies in Germany.
The Schwedt refinery, controlled by Rosneft Deutschland, is Germany's fourth largest and has supplied 90% of the capital's fuel since the plant was built in the 1960s. It receives oil from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline.
"Thanks to the transfer of management, the threat to the security of energy supply has been eliminated, and an important foundation has been laid for the preservation and future of the facility in Schwedt," the Ministry of Economy said in a statement.
This step is accompanied by a comprehensive package designed to ensure the possibility of supplying oil to Schwedt via alternative routes, the ministry said in a statement. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Economy Minister Robert Habeck and the Prime Minister of Brandenburg will reveal the details of the package at 1:30 p.m.
The government's move to hand over Rosneft Deutschland to the Federal Grid Agency followed a similar move by Berlin on SEFE, formerly known as Gazprom Germania, which was taken over by the state after Gazprom divested it in April.
