Former president of Moldova and ex-leader of the "Party of Socialists" Ihor Dodon said that he wants to be "more actively involved in politics" less than a year after he left the post of party leader and gave up his parliamentary mandate.
He said this on September 1.
Dodon said that after his release from house arrest, he wants to be more active in politics and "overthrow" the current government.
According to him, he is currently not in contact with his colleagues from the Socialist Party, but when the investigation against him is completed, he "will be with them."
"They need my support, I need their support. Our common goal is to topple this government, PAS, as soon as possible. I think we will succeed," he said.
"I'm not saying that I will run for office or not. But I was [president] and I know what that means. I know that without the parliamentary majority, without the government, we can't do anything. I don't think that Maya Sanda has a chance to win another election. . Let's first see if she will last until the end of her mandate," said Dodon.
As a reminder, Ihor Dodon has been under house arrest since the end of May on charges of treason, passive corruption, illegal enrichment and financing of the party by a criminal group. Most of the accusations are related to the so-called "ball" case - due to a 2019 video in which Dodon receives a package from the hands of the then leader of the Democratic Party, Vlad Plahotniuk.
In October 2021, Dodon gave up his parliamentary mandate under the pretext that he did not see the point of being a deputy in the parliament of this convocation and headed the "Moldovan-Russian Business Union". In addition, he announced the reformatting of the leadership of the Party of Socialists - the leadership became collegial, and Dodon became the honorary head of the political force instead of the leader.
