French Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne has warned that the worst-case scenario this winter could lead to two-hour blackouts in French homes. The Associated Press writes about it.
Bourne said the situation was partly caused by the fallout from Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as well as the planned shutdown of about half of France's 56 nuclear reactors for maintenance, including corrosion problems.
France relies on nuclear power for about 67% of its electricity – more than any other country – and about 7% of its gas.
"That means we're generating less electricity, and there may be times when it's very cold, when we may have problems with the power supply. In that case... we would turn off district by district for no more than two hours." , she said.
However, Born ensures that the gas in French homes will not be turned off, as people use it mainly for heating.
According to her, gas can potentially be rationed for enterprises that are the largest consumers.
