U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to visit Taiwan as part of her Asia tour, despite warnings from Biden administration officials who are concerned about China's reaction to such a high-level visit. This was reported by CNN, citing a senior Taiwanese official and a U.S. official.
The stop - the first for the U.S. House speaker in 25 years - is not yet part of Pelosi's public itinerary and comes at a time when U.S.-China relations are already at a low point.
The Taiwanese official added that Pelosi is expected to stay in Taiwan overnight. Exactly when she will land in Taipei is unknown.
The U.S. official added that defense officials are working around the clock to monitor any Chinese movements in the region and are developing a security plan.
