European Union countries should be prepared for different scenarios, including the complete cessation of Russian gas supplies. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this in a speech to the European Parliament on Wednesday.
"We need to prepare now for further gas supply disruptions and even a complete cessation of Russian gas supplies. For example: today, 12 member states have already directly touched on partial or complete disconnection of Russian gas. It's obvious: the path continues to use energy as a weapon," von der Leyen said.
That is why, she said, the European Commission is now working on an emergency plan. It will be presented by mid-July.
"The member states have their national contingency plans. That's good, but I think we need European cooperation and joint action as 27-and-over. We need to make sure that in the event of a total supply outage, gas will get to where it is most needed. We need to ensure European solidarity. And we need to protect the single market as well as the supply chains in industry," the head of the EC stressed.
