EU High Representative Josep Borrell will visit Iran on June 24-25 as part of an ongoing effort to return to full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, known as the nuclear agreement with Iran.
This was announced by the EU foreign policy service.
Borrell will hold meetings with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other Iranian counterparts.
An official spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the talks will discuss bilateral relations, regional and international issues, as well as the situation with the removal of sanctions.
In March, Western countries came close to renewing a 2015 agreement with Iran, but the talks were derailed in part over a dispute over whether the United States should remove the Iranian Revolutionary Guard from its list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).
News of Borrell's previously unannounced visit came after Amir-Abdollahian said last week that Iran still believed the talks were successful.
The talks in Vienna, which began last April, aim to bring the United States back to the nuclear agreement, including by lifting sanctions on Iran, and to ensure that Tehran fully meets its obligations.
The United States unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear agreement in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump before imposing a wave of harsh sanctions on the country.
