The Danish government is ready to support granting Ukraine EU candidate status if the European Commission gives a positive recommendation.
This was stated by Minister of Foreign Affairs Yeppe Kofod, reports Ekstra Bladet.
"If the European Commission decides that Ukraine is ready to acquire candidate status, that is also something we can support," Kofod said.
He made the statement Thursday after French, German and Italian leaders in Kiev said they supported granting Ukraine candidate status.
Before Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen travels to Brussels for an EU summit to support the decision, she must receive a mandate in parliament.
Kofod added that if a country becomes a candidate, it does not mean that the path to membership is short or easy.
"It is also important to say that it has to go a long way. That goes for all candidates, they have to meet the Copenhagen criteria," Kofod said.
The Copenhagen criteria refer to democracy, the rule of law and human rights, among other things.
This week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Denmark to support the granting of EU candidate status because it is one of the key factors in uniting the Ukrainian people.
As you know, the European Commission is expected to conclude on June 17 on the applications of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova to join the EU.
According to media reports, in its conclusion on granting candidate status to the EU, the European Commission will recommend it for Ukraine and Moldova with additional requirements for the latter, while it will refuse it for Georgia.
