Pope criticizes Russian "cruelty" in Ukraine and says invasion violates nation's rights

Pope Francis lashed out at Russia for its actions in Ukraine, saying its troops were brutal, violent and ferocious and that the invasion violated the country's right to self-determination.

In the text of a talk he gave to Jesuit media editors last month, published Tuesday, he praised the "brave" Ukrainians for fighting to survive, but also said that the situation was not black and white and that the war was "perhaps in some sense provoked."
