Erdogan demands that the Swedish prime minister fire the defense minister

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson should fire Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist.

This was reported by Expressen, citing sources.

Hultqvist was speaking at a party 10 years ago, praising the Kurdistan Workers' Party and its imprisoned leader Abdullah Öcalan, Erdogan said.

In 2011, Hultqvist, then a Social Democrat MP, attended a party in the city of Burlenge to mark the PKK's 33rd anniversary.

He said at the time that he attended the event because he wanted to defend the Kurds. In particular, he wanted to show support for the Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party, which has since been renamed the Party of Democratic Regions, in its efforts to have Kurdish recognized as an official language in Turkey.

"Turkey wants Hultqvist to be removed as defense minister," a source told Expressen, indicating that the issue was raised during contacts between representatives of the Swedish and Turkish governments.

Turkey is known to be the only country in NATO to oppose the entry of Sweden and Finland, which applied in mid-May.

Ankara's officially stated demands mainly concern Sweden's attitude towards the Kurds and the Turkish opposition and an arms export ban.

Turkey has also claimed to have allegedly found Swedish weapons with Kurdistan Workers' Party fighters, which Sweden denies.

Unofficially, it is known that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes to get some concessions from the U.S. on the sale of aircrafts and sanctions imposed on Turkey for the purchase of Russian S-400 by vetoing the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO.
