U.S. Senate drafts resolution recognizing Russia's creation of hunger threat as a weapon of war

In the U.S. Senate, lawmakers from both parties presented a resolution condemning the use of hunger as a weapon of war in Ukraine and other countries.

This was reported by the Voice of America.

"Intentionally starving civilians as a weapon of war is a war crime. Period," said one of the initiators of the document, Democratic Senator Robert Menendez.

The resolution, among other things, calls on the U.S. government to:

-Prioritize diplomatic efforts to identify and address cases where hunger and intentional food deprivation are used as weapons in war;

- Continue efforts to address serious food insecurity through humanitarian response, particularly providing food aid to countries in need;

-make the use of hunger as a weapon of war subject to instruments that hold individuals, governments, law enforcement, organizations accountable for what they have done, such as the Global Magnitsky Act.

"Hunger should not become a weapon of war," said Republican Senator John Thune. - "The United States and its partners must work together to restore global stability and hold individuals and governments accountable for the conflicts that lead to global hunger and endanger food security.

"This bipartisan resolution condemns those who brutally use hunger as a weapon of war against civilians. The resolution calls on the United States to hold them accountable for these atrocities. It also calls on our country to continue its strong diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to strengthen the global food supply in the event of future upheaval," adds Democratic Senator Cory Booker.
