Hungary will not support oil embargo against Russia - Szijjártó

Hungary has not changed its position on the oil embargo against Russia and insists that it is not ready to support it, despite the difficult negotiations and concessions offered in recent days. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said this, reports HVG.hu.

"Hungary will not vote for the European Commission's initiative on sanctions against Russia because it creates a problem for Hungary and contains no proposal to solve it," Szijjártó said.

He echoed Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's words that the European Commission's proposal is like an atomic bomb for the Hungarian economy and would destroy its stable energy supply.

Szijjártó added that the country's geographical position, transportation routes, location and the presence of oil and gas fields determine the security of Hungary's energy supply.

He said that each EU country's energy supply structure is different, and that EU heads of state and government have agreed that the European Union can only take measures that take into account the different energy supply structures in each member state.

Nearly two-thirds of the oil Hungary receives comes from Russia.
