The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands decided to expel 17 employees of the Russian embassy from the country. Belgium made a similar decision, declaring 21 Russian diplomats persona non grata. This was reported by Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra on Twitter and the publication HLN.

"The Netherlands is expelling 17 Russian intelligence officers associated under diplomatic cover with Russian missions in the Netherlands. These intelligence officers pose a threat to Dutch security," the Dutch foreign minister said, adding that the measure was taken as part of the country's national security.

At the same time, Belgium expels 21 diplomats from Russia because they are suspected of involvement in espionage activities.

The employees of the Russian embassy have two weeks to leave the country.
