U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken compared the siege of Mariupol by Russian troops to the siege of Leningrad by Nazi German troops.
He wrote this on Twitter.
"Every Russian knows about the siege of Leningrad during World War II. Unfortunately, history has repeated itself, but now the Russian authorities are brutally starving Ukrainian cities," Blinken wrote.
The siege of Mariupol has lasted more than nine days and during these days the Russian military has been continuously shelling the civilian population.
Half a million people are currently without light, water, heat and communications.
For more than nine days the city has been cut off from the outside world.
