The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will hold an extraordinary plenary session on March 14 and 15, and the main topic on the agenda will be the consequences of Russian aggression. This was reported by the PACE press service. The session will be held in a hybrid format.
PACE head Tini Cox also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to address the assembly via teleconference. The speech, according to preliminary information, is scheduled for noon on Monday.
On Monday afternoon, the Assembly will hear a presentation from the Committee of Ministers, the executive body of the Council of Europe, followed by an exchange of views with Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic-Buric.
All day Tuesday will be devoted to an urgent debate.
As a result of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the Council of Europe suspended Russia's membership in two bodies, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Russia remains legally a member of the Council of Europe and a party to the relevant conventions, retaining Russia's obligations, including under the European Convention on Human Rights. This also means Russia's obligation to comply with ECtHR judgments.
Members of the Bureau of the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional law, also initiated the termination of Russia's right to be represented on the commission.
