Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that the country will not join financial and economic sanctions of the West against Russia. It would harm the country and the population.
This was reported by Ekho Kavkaza. Other media outlets also confirm.
"Georgia, taking into account our national interests and taking into account the interests of our people, is not going to take part in financial and economic sanctions, because, I repeat, this will only further harm our country and our people. Accordingly, as the head of the government, who is responsible for both domestic and foreign policy, I will be guided only by the interests of our country," said Garibashvili.
"We need to stay calm. Nothing threatens Georgia. With our national policy, pragmatic and based on our national interests, we have managed to achieve peace and stability in the country during these nine years. At the same time, we managed to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union, visa free travel and free trade without any losses or destabilization. At the same time we managed to stabilize the situation as much as possible, including de-escalating the situation with Russia, which, of course, was in the national interest of our country," he also said.
We shall remind you that in response to Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine, the USA imposed sanctions against Russia's largest banks - Sberbank and VTB. In addition, the entourage of Russian President Vladimir Putin fell under restrictive measures.
European Union leaders on Thursday agreed to impose new economic sanctions against Russia, joining the United States and Britain.
