U.S. Congress wants to exclude Russia from UN Security Council - Axios

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives are considering a resolution calling for Russia's expulsion from the UN Security Council, Axios reported.

The resolution, a copy of which was obtained by Axios, calls on the UN "to take immediate procedural action" to amend Article 23 of its charter to exclude Russia from permanent membership in the Security Council.

The document states that Russia's invasion of Ukraine and support for the self-proclaimed republics "constitute a direct threat to international peace and security" and "contradict its obligations and commitments as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

At the same time, the weekly notes that it is impossible to exclude Russia from the UN Security Council.

According to the UN charter, all permanent members of the Security Council must sign any amendments, which gives Russia the opportunity to block such a move.
