Forty-eight states and five international organizations have come out in support of Ukraine. This is reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Statements in support of Ukraine were made by: FRG, France, Australia, USA, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia, Estonia, Moldova, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Mexico, North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Portugal, Bulgaria, New Zealand, Cyprus, Italy, Iceland, Georgia, Croatia, Korea, Spain, Costa Rica, Brazil, Japan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ireland, Belgium, Colombia, Canada, Liberia, Peru, Singapore, Palestine, Belize.
Major signals of international support:
- State that Russia will be held accountable for its actions.
- report that they are coordinating their actions with NATO and EU partners.
- promise a tough response (powerful statement by Boris Johnson).
- The West will coordinate its response within a day in the G7, NATO and EU formats (statement by Olaf Scholz).
- A number of countries have convened emergency government meetings, in particular Japan, Austria and Poland.
- By an act of aggression, Russia excludes itself from the international community (statement by Andrzej Duda).
- Lithuania calls for tough sanctions, including disconnection from SWIFT.
- Some countries say they are ready to accept refugees, particularly Moldova.
- Moldova will declare a state of emergency because of Russia's attack on Ukraine.
International organizations:
EU
1) Statement by Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen: harshly condemned the Russian attack. Signaled that the Kremlin will be held accountable.
2) Statement by the President of the European Parliament: promised to hold the Kremlin accountable. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the leaders of the European Union will gather for an extraordinary summit on
February 24 to approve sanctions against Russia.
NATO
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg: "Allies in NATO will meet to discuss the restoration of Russian aggression."
NATO PA President J. Connolly: "Allies and all responsible nations and institutions must now impose a comprehensive package of massive, crushing and lasting sanctions and consequences that our parliaments fully support."
OSCE
The Polish OSCE Chairmanship, OSCE Foreign Minister Z. Rau and OSCE Secretary General H. Schmid condemned President Putin's launching of a military operation in Ukraine and issued a statement: "We strongly condemn Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. This attack on Ukraine puts the lives of millions of people at serious risk and is a gross violation of international law and Russia's obligations."
UN
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights N. Bachelet: "At this critical juncture, the priority must be to prevent further escalation, to prevent civilian casualties, displacement and destruction of civilian infrastructure."
As a reminder, today at 5:00, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a military operation in the Donbass and called on the Ukrainian military to surrender their weapons. Martial law was imposed throughout Ukraine.
