British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the worst fears were justified, and all warnings about Russian invasion were tragically accurate.
He said this in a special address to the nation, reports the BBC.
According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin unleashed a war in Europe and attacked a friendly country without any provocation or convincing reason.
"Bombs are being dropped on innocent populations. A huge invasion is coming by land, air and sea. This is not some distant country we know little about," Johnson said.
Addressing the Ukrainians, Johnson said: "We are with you, we pray for you and your families."
He said he knows the flame of freedom will "burst brightly again" in Ukraine. "I do not believe that a Russian dictator will subjugate the national feeling of Ukrainians."
According to her, Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe, has enjoyed freedom and democracy for decades: "We cannot allow this freedom to be destroyed. We cannot and will not look away."
Johnson recalled that Britain was one of the first countries in Europe to send defense weapons to Ukraine.
Other allies have followed suit, and Britain will do more in the coming days, he said, without going into detail.
"Today, together with our allies, we will agree on a massive package of economic sanctions designed to stop the Russian economy," Johnson says.
He said Europe must also collectively abandon its dependence on oil and gas, which have given Putin control of Europe.
Johnson called the Russian attack "Putin's disgusting and barbaric adventure," which "must end in failure.
