Russia to be banned from selling sovereign debt in London - Head of the British Foreign Office

Britain will stop the sale of Russia's sovereign debt in London amid Russian President Vladimir Putin's recognition of the so-called "L/DPR". Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said this, Reuters reported.

"We have made it clear that we are going to limit Russia's access to British markets. We're going to stop the Russian government from raising sovereign debt in the United Kingdom," Truss said.

She added that "there will be even tougher sanctions against major oligarchs and major organizations in Russia that will limit Moscow's access to financial markets in the event of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

British officials would have to draft additional laws to limit sovereign debt sales, Western officials said. It would also affect clearing transactions.

As a reminder, Britain imposed sanctions against five Russian banks and three legal entities. Prime Minister Boris Johnson called this the first step.
