U.S. convenes UN Security Council over threat of Russian attack on Ukraine

The United States has invited the UN Security Council to meet for a discussion on 31 January because of the threat of an attack by the Russian Federation on Ukraine. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield released a statement to this effect.

"Now, after weeks of close consultations with Ukraine and partners, the United States is convening an open meeting of the Security Council to discuss an issue of great importance to international peace and security: Russia's threatening behavior toward Ukraine and the Russian military build-up near Ukraine's borders and in Belarus," it said.

The ambassador notes that more than 100,000 Russian troops are piling up on Ukraine's borders, and in addition Russia is committing other destabilizing acts against Ukraine, posing a clear threat to international peace and security.

"Security Council members must directly examine the facts and consider what the stakes are for Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and key obligations and principles of the international order if Russia goes ahead with a further invasion of Ukraine. We cannot now simply wait to see what happens. The full attention of the Security Council is needed now, and we look forward to a direct and focused discussion," Linda Thomas-Greenfield emphasized.

Recall that as a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia can veto any of its resolutions.
