Canada fears an armed conflict could erupt in Ukraine and is working with allies to send a message to Russia that further aggression against Kiev is unacceptable, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday, Reuters reported.
"We do fear armed conflict in Ukraine. We are very concerned about the Russian government's position ... and the fact that they are sending soldiers to the border with Ukraine," Trudeau said at a news conference.
Canada, with a significant and politically influential population of Ukrainian descent, has taken a strong stance on Russia since the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
"We are working with our international partners and colleagues to make it very, very clear that Russian aggression and further invasion of Ukraine is absolutely unacceptable," Trudeau said.
To add, Trudeau dodged the issue of sending defensive weapons, saying any decision would be "based on what's best for the people of Ukraine."
