British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss stressed that Britain is ready to impose tough sanctions for a potential new Russian invasion of Ukraine, and that London does not perceive the Kremlin's attempts to blame Ukraine or NATO itself for the tension.
She notes this in her article for EuroPravda, "30 Years of British Support: What London Guarantees Ukraine to Defend Against the Russian Federation."
"Britain and other NATO members have made it clear that any further military invasion of Ukraine would be an extraordinary strategic mistake. We will respond powerfully to any such move, in particular by imposing coordinated sanctions to severely damage Russian interests and the economy.
We are closely watching Russia's efforts to create an excuse for conflict by laying false accusations of provocation on Ukraine or NATO that have nothing to do with reality," said Liz Truss.
She noted that Ukraine is showing commendable restraint in this tense situation, and NATO is essentially a defense alliance.
"We have been and continue to be clear that our goal is not to threaten or encircle Russia. The prime minister and I are unequivocal in this regard," the minister stressed.
On Tuesday, Britain's foreign minister reportedly discussed Ukraine and the threat of Russian invasion with the EU's top diplomat.
As reported, new talks between the U.S. and Russia to discuss Ukraine are planned for January 10. The White House stressed that it would adhere to the principle of "nothing about our allies and partners without our allies and partners, including Ukraine.
